The Power of Practicing More

People have goals that we want to achieve in our lives. These goals may include learning a new language, eating healthier and losing weight, becoming a better parent, saving more money, and so on. It is very important to realize that we have the power to close the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. It’s a choice that comes with responsibility, sacrifice and a lot of grit. Nobody can push that further to do anything, it is only you who can push yourself. Your inner dialogue determines how you present yourself to the world around you and most importantly when you take the necessary steps to actually make a move in the direction of your dreams.

“When we practice something, we are involved in the deliberate repetition of a process with the intention of reaching a specific goal. The words deliberate and intention are key here because they define the difference between actively practicing something and passively learning it.”

—Thomas Sterner, The Practicing Mind

We buy courses on how to start a business or how to learn a new language or how to lose weight fast in three months. We have a perception that if we knew about a better strategy, then we would get better results. We believe that a new result requires new knowledge and strategy. What I’m starting to realize, however, is that new knowledge does not necessarily drive new results, it is the matter of you practicing and practicing. In fact, learning something new can actually be a waste of time if your goal is to make progress and not simply gain additional knowledge. You should stop avoiding opportunities or convincing yourself that you can’t do something, say yes to more creating more things. Yes, to doing what really expect of yourself which leads to progress.

And yes, to start from today, not tomorrow. You should also learn how to say “no” more often if agreeing to do too many things is one of your problems. You don’t win by sitting on the fence. You succeed by getting your hands dirty. There are no shortcuts to progress or mastery. You can never beat the process. But you can overcome the obstacles. You should become unstoppable no matter what run, walk or crawl. Whatever you do, just move in the direction of your dreams. You will be better than everyone else who isn’t trying, moving or making progress. Everything else around you is moving. Nobody stops for you because you want to think things through. Don’t overthink!
